This has real advantages. Data reveals patterns invisible to introspection: that certain meals disturb sleep, that alcohol reliably suppresses recovery, that the weeks of low mood coincide with weeks of low movement. Objective feedback also interrupts self-deception, which is otherwise abundant.
None of this replaces deliberate training, which produces adaptations that incidental movement does not — particularly strength, which declines with age and protects against the frailty that eventually determines independence. In conversations about preventive care, a sensible relationship with measurement keeps it in an advisory role. Use it to establish a baseline and to detect trends over weeks. Ignore individual days. There is a distinction between training and physical activity that has become central as work has become sedentary.
